MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR MECHANISMS OF NEURONAL INFECTIONS: A FOCUS ON ARBOVIRUSES

Sara SALINAS
UMR 1058, Pathogenesis and Control of Chronic Infections, Montpellier

Sara Salinas will present preliminary and published data on questions regarding the pathophysiology of neuronal infections. In particular, she will show data on the neuronal and retinal infections of the arbovirus Zika. Once viruses reach the brain, they can infect/replicate in different cell types, which can lead to different cellular responses and outcomes. This will also ultimately dictate the potential sequelae associated with neuronal infection, for instance if neuronal death occurs. ZIKV (Zika virus) can lead to neurological complications, in particular Guillain-Barré syndrome and microcephaly. The exact mechanism(s) behind this neurovirulence is starting to be described for ZIKV. Moreover, the recent epidemic was due to the ZIKV Asian strain but recent reports suggest that the African strain can also infect neural cells. Here, we did undertake an in vitro comparison of the neuro-infectivity of these two strains. This could potentially explain and/or predict the neurological disorders observed in South-America and potential future endemic zones such as Africa.
