OPTOGENETIC IN THE VISUAL SYSTEM : FROM CIRCUIT ANALYSIS TO VISUAL RESTORATION IN BLIND PATIENTS
Serge PICAUD
Institut de la vision, Paris
The eye is an open window on the central nervous system and more precisely on the retina providing thereby an ideal system for optogenetic applications in normal and pathological conditions. We are therefore taking advantage of optogenetic therapy to assess neuronal connections at single cell level and to restore vision in blind patients. In visual restoration, our preclinical data are paving the way for clinical trials due to start next year both on a new prosthetic device and on optogenetic therapy.
